Welcome to our latest DIY adventure! I’m excited to share our kitchen refurbishment project with you. Over the coming weeks, I’ll take you through the various stages of our DIY project, from planning and budgeting to the final reveal. Whether you’re looking for inspiration or practical tips for your own kitchen makeover, I’ve got you covered.
An Overview
Before diving into the details, let’s give you a brief view of what this project entails. Our kitchen has been basically the same since we purchased our home about 35 years ago; it was definitely time for a fresh, modern update. What finally pushed us to actually do something about it was because our cabinets were literary falling apart. I mean they were the original ones with those awful cheap plastic drawers. Nothing says redo the kitchen like doors falling off and undersink kitchen plumbing that looks like MacGeyver had fixed the plumbing over and over again using what he had on hand at the time. For this project, we’ll be tackling everything from new cabinets and countertops to flooring and lighting. Here’s a sneak peek at our plans:
- Planning and Budgeting: Establishing a realistic budget and creating a detailed plan.
- Design Inspiration: Gathering ideas and deciding on a style and color scheme.
- Demolition: Removing old fixtures and preparing the space for renovation. Sometimes this entails getting rid of a portion of a non weight bearing wall.
- Installing New Elements: Cabinets, countertops, flooring, backsplash, and appliances.
- Finishing Touches: Painting, lighting, and accessorizing.
Goals and Objectives
Our primary goal is to transform our kitchen into a functional and stylish space that reflects our personal taste and provides us much needed storage for our kitchen and pantry items. We aim to:
- Maximize storage and efficiency.
- Incorporate modern, high-quality materials.
- Maintain a somewhat cohesive design that complements the rest of our home. We kind of like a fun vibe as we are really into all things Disney as well as bright cheerful spaces. (Well at least my husband and I are.. we are going to tone it down some for the rest of our family.)
- Stay within our budget and timeline.
Why We Chose to DIY
There are several reasons we decided to take the DIY route for our kitchen refurbishment:
- Cost Savings: By doing the work ourselves, we can save a significant amount on labor costs. There is a much needed balance between quality and cost that is needing to be considered.
- Customization: DIY allows us to tailor every aspect of the project to our specific needs and preferences.
- Learning Experience: We enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of completing home improvement projects ourselves. The joy that comes from finishing a project yourself is indescribable.
What to Expect
