Persephone’s story: The Seasons

In Greek Mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter.  One day while gathering flowers she was abducted by Hades and taken into the Underworld.  Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, because despaired and while she wandered in search of her daughter caused the crops to wither and for winter come.  Eventually, Hades was persuaded to allow Persephone to return for half of the year.  While she remains as Queen in the Underworld, the earth is in its barren season (Fall and Winter) and upon her return (Spring and Summer), the flowers bloom and the earth once again bears fruit.
