Math Essentials

No-Nonsense Algebra

No-Nonsense Algebra from Math Essentials is a math curriculum which includes an access code to free online video lessons that go along with the soft-bound book.  Each lesson is self-contained and concise (about 2 pages) which makes it not only less labor intensive but less intimidating to your student.  Don’t let the concise lessons fool you because there is built in review as well.   Also, there are  helpful hints incorporated  within each lesson introduction to help your student understand the basics for comprehesive understanding.  No-Nonsense Algebra is designed to provide a complete algebra program which will provide the student with a strong foundation for further math studies.

This program covers the following topics:

  • Necessary Tools for Algebra
  • Solving Equations
  • Graphing and Analysing Linear Equations
  • Solving and Graphing Inequalities
  • systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
  • Polynomials
  • Rational Expressions (Algebraic Fractions)
  • Radical Expressions and Geometry
  • Quadratic Equations
  • Algebra Word Problems

The book also provides a “How to Use” section, Chapter Reviews, Final Exam, Problem Solutions, Glossary , and a Resource Center.

My daughter has been enjoying using this curriculum because of several of the features I mentioned above. For her, it combines the best of both situations for learning math by having  physical book lessons in addition to a video component to help her learn and understand lessons better.  She  also likes that each lesson is short and to the point rather than dragging on over many pages of material.

For each lesson, there is a short introduction  to the topic which provides a concise and complete explanation of the material along with helpful hints on how to the problems should be handled.  Next, there is an example section which steps you through how to do the problems.  At this point my daughter chose to view the associated lesson video prior to working through the provided exercises in the book. Since this isn’t a workbook but more of a textbook, my daughter maintained a notebook where she copied each lesson’s exercises and her work to each problem.  After completing the exercises, there is a review section and you can then choose to go to the back of the book which has the solutions to each problem.

After  completion of  all the lesssons, there is a final exam which can be used as a final comprehensive check for your student.

Also found in the back of the book, there is a glossary section with useful and helpful information  such as charts, formulas, symbols, terms and more.  This was very helpful as a good source of reference when learning algebra.

As a homeschool parent, you do not need to fully understand algebra for this curriculum to be a success for your student because  No-Nonsense Algebra is truly a self-contained program requiring little outside work on your part.

You can easily use  No-Nonsense Algebra as your main algebra curriculum or as a supplement to your current math program.  The program seems to be a good choice  for both visual and auditory learners.

Check out No-Nonsense Algebra from Math Essentials  for yourself as well as their facebook page and other’s who have reviewed their math program. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
