Pete’s Dragon: In Theaters 8/12/16

Admittedly I was not sure whether or not I was going to want to see this remake of the 70’s original, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Pete’s Dragon fully developed the personal relationships between Pete and Elliot as well as the ones between Pete and the family that discovered him. The film was full of emotional scenes which served to draw in its audience and make Pete’s Dragon believable. Unlike most films where the “villain” is a black and white character, the one in this film is more life-like in that he is more of a gray area villain. What makes him the “villain” is not purely what he does from being just evil but a a mixture of from it being his job (forestry) and personal gain. As a result, the characters in Pete’s Dragon appear more close to real life rather than the fabricated ones that are just in there to further the plot. All in all I felt that this remake was a success.

Pete’s Dragon Synopsis:

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are a little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.
