Pujols: More Than the Game by Scott Lamb, Tim Ellsworth
PUJOLS: More than the Game by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth is a book inspired by both Albert Pujols immense athletic ability and his day to day Christian faith. Lamb and Ellsworth start with his struggles growing up with an alcoholic father in poor Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and follow him through his meteoric rise to become arguably one of the best baseball players of all time. They describe Albert’s meeting his wife Deidre and how she has been the anchor for his faith through both the good and bad times every athlete and every Christian experiences. PUJOLS: More that the Game follows Albert through the 2010 season, where he becomes the first baseball player to hit 30 or more home runs and 100 or more RBI for 10 straight seasons. But more importantly, it details his and Deidre’s growth as Christians living so prominently in the public eye.
This book is written as much for the avid sports fan, as it is for anyone looking for an inspirational journey through a fellow Christian’s life. It is easy to relatively easy to read, though admittedly some of the seasons do run together a bit. This is more due to Albert’s consistency from year to year than any problems on the authors’ part. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get to know Albert Pujols better, or anyone who wants to see what an actively growing Christian faith can accomplish.
