Apologia: Read for the Heart
Bookcases and shelves line the walls of a homeschooler’s home. But what do we put on them? As a Christian, one verse comes to mind when I think about how we should choose what to fill our shelves at home.
Proverbs 4:23 – “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
What we expose our kids to shapes what they think, how they act and what they become in the future, My last review for this TOS Homeschool Crew year is a book by Sarah Clarkson called Read for the Heart which is published by Apologia Press.
Read for the Heart is a book about books! The author provides an insight into the world of books through some anecdotes about her own experience with reading as well as providing us with recommendations for over 1000 great books for families. It is a truly wonderful guide to families to help us seek out and find wholesome books. With this book in hand, we do not have to sift through the millions of books out there in order to find the true jewels for our children. Between its covers, you will find sections about picture books, children’s fiction, fairy tales and fantasy, history, poetry as well as other categories to explore. Each section has a brief introduction for you concerning the topic of the books being listed there. Each selection lists pertinent information about the book as well as any cautionary statements just in case there is content that might be more suitable for an older child. There are several appendixes listing such things as the Caldecott and Newbery Medalists, Historical fiction by G. A. Henty and a few others. You can see this is a must have for any homeschool library. Whether or not you are a homeschooler this should be one book that you should definitely put on your bookshelf.
