Latin Alive! (Classical Academic Press) review

Throughout the TOS Homeschool Crew year, I have received many things to review which were all great products for homeschoolers. However, I have to confess to being more zealously excited about receiving Latin Alive! bundle by Classical Academic Press. Mainly because I really have been wanting for my kids to learn Latin. Ok. You might say “What are you crazy?” Well maybe. However, I really feel that Latin provides a person with a strong foundation for learning the romance languages, for the study of roots and vocabulary of our English language, and lastly it provides a person with a great basis for better understanding of grammar in our English language.

The Latin Alive! curriculum is geared toward middle and high school students starting with 7th grade. My oldest is currently in 7th grade and I admit to not knowing how she would take to learning Latin. She has had a very minimal exposure to Latin and was not sure about learning it. In teen translation that means she was thinking it was not going to be a cool thing to do. However, I have been very impressed with how well she has taken to it in addition to doing it mostly on her own by watching the DVD lessons and working along with it in her student notebook. Even my youngest, who is 8 years old, and who is working through a more primary Latin book seems to be learning a little more as she watches the DVD along with her sister. I have been so excited about this curriculum that I even think I am picking up some Latin as well and I plan on taking some time in the future to work through this curriculum too.

By now you can see I am thrilled with Latin Alive! I am sure you are now thinking what is it really all about?

Latin Alive! is good for both new students as well as those who have already had exposure to Latin. The program itself not only focuses on gaining a comprehensive knowledge of Latin with an emphasis on grammar but in addition the student learns about Roman history and mythology along the way. The Latin Alive! DVD has 16 hours of instruction. The first book of Latin Alive! contains 36 weekly chapters which is described more fully here at the Classical Academic Press website so that you can read for yourself what your student will be learning throughout book 1. You can also see samples at this website location as well as additional information. The teacher edition that goes along with the student textbook contains the complete textbook with answer keys, extra explanations and information to help you teach in addition to unit tests and extra projects and activities. You can read more about the teacher edition here.

I was very impressed with the teaching quality of the DVD and from day 1 saw that my daughter was easily picking up Latin and beginning to understand grammar better as well. I am looking forward to continuing with Latin Alive and moving on to Book 2.
