Apologia: Who is God?
I have been using Who Is God? (And Can I Really Know Him?) from Apologia and Summit Ministries which is the first in the “What We Believe” series. This series is intended as an apologetics/worldview study. According to the Apologia website, the series was developed in order to teach children the basic essential Christian beliefs and how to discern truth using the word of God. Many items in our society bombard our children with ideas about what is true, right and wrong, just, what is healthy for us, what defines true beauty, how we should treat people, and other concepts which help us to form opinions on how to live in society and what defines who we are as an individual. These ideas come from various sources: song lyrics, tv shows and movies, games, books, peers, and many other sources. This series helps our children to identify truth by filtering it through God’s word which is the foundation of a Christian’s life.
Who is God? is a beautifully illustrated curriculum with 252 pages that teaches both Biblical truth as well as how to use scripture to understand and identify truth in the world around us. At the beginning of the book is a how to section which contains a proposed schedule and basic information on how to teach using this book. Each chapter contains the same components which make up the lesson structure throughout the book. While not every chapter has the same layout it nonetheless contains a good structure in which to teach each Biblical truth being discussed for that lesson. It did take me a little while to determine how I wanted to teach each lesson regardless of what was provided in the How to section. Though when I got a good feel for the book, I really enjoyed how the book integrated Biblical truths, stories, vocabulary terms and the other elements in each lesson to teach a Biblical worldview. So many books are out there to teach a Biblical standpoint but few go past the Bible and integrate a full worldview coming to terms with science and history and other educational disciplines as well as this book does within the What We Believe series. I have showed this book to other homeschool friends and they were immediately drawn to it as I have been in reviewing Who is God? They are looking forward to incorporating it into their lesson plans and I fully hope to do so with the rest of this curriculum series. I feel it very important to use the Bible as a foundation when viewing our world as well as the knowledge that we have been given by our Creator in learning more about the world in which we live. As a Christian it is very important to teach my children to learn to identify truth firmly grounded on Biblical truth so that my children can grow up on a solid foundation of understanding of the world around us.
