TenMarks: TOS Crew review
TenMarks is an online math program that helps students to master math concepts from grades 3rd through High School. Each child has access to a curriculum that is personalized and follows state standards.
You start by setting up your child with a grade level which can either be chosen by you or you can have your child go through an assessment to help you determine a grade level within TenMarks.
Each week your child will be assigned 4 worksheets to complete and you as the parent get email reminders including the deadline for the assignment. Each worksheet contains 10 questions in multiple choice format. To the right of the question your child is allowed to get a total of 3 hints to help answer that question or they can choose to watch a video which helps them learn how to answer the question.
As a parent you an choose various settings for your child as well as view results in form of an online report card. You can also choose to pause the program for vacations or illness, reorganize which concepts are worked on next as well change the number of worksheets received from 3 to 7 per week. My youngest found she wanted to do more worksheets while my oldest was happy on a lower number per week. As a parent you can also choose to set up a reward for your child upon completing a certain number of worksheets. Your child also gets access to games once they complete a certain number of worksheets as well as can print out certificates after they master concepts.
As we worked through TenMarks, we did notice that the videos did not always help with understanding how to solve a particular problem, but instead seemed to provide an overview for the current math concept that was being worked on. My kids did need to ask me for help on occasion because of this. However, TenMarks did make for a nice supplement to our math curriculum.
A few things we liked about the program. It was a nice way to review old concepts as well as to introduce new ones. I liked that my kids had a math supplement that was structured for them to use on their own and that I did not have to setup for them every day since TenMarks does that for you.
The concept of having hints and videos as helps for a student is a good idea and in some cases they were helpful. However, as I already mentioned, the videos provided more of an overall review of the general concept rather than as a how to for the specific question. Another thing I noticed was that on certain videos the person speaking did things like say “ok” throughout the video or had other speech quirks that distracted from the video’s content. My kids did not particularly find the hints or videos very helpful when they were trying to determine how to find a solution to a specific problem. They used the videos more as a review for the general topic. I am not sure if this was the case for all the math concepts or just happened to be the ones that we were working on during our review period.
Since no math program is a perfect fit for everyone and no one has the same experience as another, you should check out TenMarks for yourself.
