Alice in Wonderland—-

We are sitting here watching Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. I do think this is one of my favorite versions of it. I found a website with information about the story and thought it would make a good unit study.

Some days I feel like Alice.

I am often amused that people make assumptions about an author based upon today’s values and customs rather than on the time that the author lived. For this reason many assumed that Alice in Wonderland as written under the influence of some type of hallucinogen rather than on pure imagination. I believe this rumor started likely in the 60s. There were other stipulations about the author’s character based not on the values and what was acceptable by this day but base on that of today. Then again it is human character to judge without facts and first hand experience so I should not be surprised. People love their scandal and car wrecks. Indeed making up things when they are not as exciting or dramatic in their own right. Hollywood thrives on this.

That is why I intend to leave out the speculations and deal in facts about the author himself. Lewis Carroll or Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson lived from January 27, 1832 – 14 January 1898. In his life he was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. There are many websites devoted to discussion about him and his literature as well as analysis of his character most of which is based on the values and views of the current society in which the writer lived rather than on the historical significance of Carrol/Dodgson’s time. One website which I am currently reading is http://www.alice-in-wonderland.net/.
