Oh Yuck!!!! Buckets-O-Fun!!!

Lots of “Ewwww! Yuck! Gross!!!” were heard from my kitchen lately. Why you ask?

We received a few samples of the various Yuck products from Buckets-O-Fun in order to provide an honest review of their products.

In addition to samples of their Chunky Yuck, Saucy Yuck, Snowy Yuck, and Sticky Yuck, we received a handout of potential experiments and play activities to use with the various types of Yuck they sent us.

We started with the Chunky Yuck as it was the Yuck that took the longest to absorb the water and form completely. To begin with, the Yuck comes as small crystals that looked a bit like Rock Salt. We added a 1/3 of a cup of water at a time to about a teaspoon of the Chunky Yuck. We recorded how much time it took to start absorbing the water and begin to grow. After an hour we added more water and did this til be had added about 2 1/3 cups to our small portion of Yuck. By the next day we had squishy cubes of Yuck that everyone had fun playing with.

We put our hands into the bucket of Yuck we had made and squeezed and buried our hands in it. Thus you can see why we heard lots of Eww! and Yuck! in our household. But also there were a lot of Cool!!!! heard that day too. Though virtually harmless, I will mention that there are precautions on how to clean up the Yuck. Because it absorbs water to expand, you do not want to pour it down your drains or allow anyone to eat it. Obvious stuff like that.

Another day we tried the Snowy Yuck. This Yuck begins its life as what looks like sugar. I think that was one of our favorites because it was so neat seeing water being absorbed by the Snowy Yuck to form what appeared to look exactly like glistening snow crystals. It really did look like a small pile of snow.

Even though it did have a slight rubbery feel to it, it still felt kind of like you were holding a clump of snow in your hand except it was warm and not cold. Can you imagine living somewhere that doesn’t get snow and getting some of this to play with? We get snow where we live but I can see how excited some kids could get in places where snow is not the norm. Maybe at Christmastime this would be cool for families to start a tradition having pretend snow during their holidays.

My oldest was not around when my youngest and I tried the Sticky Yuck. She is not much into the gross factor so she was asking if she had to touch it. I laughed because after I made it and she looked at it, she did touch it and play with it a bit.

“Eww! Gross! It is like snot!” she said.
Ewww

Still was pretty cool to put it between your two hands and pull the Yuck between your fingers and watch it stretch.

The Saucy Yuck I admit we have not tried yet. This type of Yuck comes as a powder. I want to come up with something cool to do with it and when my oldest is around to share our experience. When hydrated it is said to be the consistency of applesauce.

The Buckets-O-Fun website also has other products they sell in addition to its Yuck product as well as carrying Yuck Tints to add to your Yuck to make different colors of it. We figured that would be cool to try someday.

We found out that since Yuck absorbs water, it was best to use a paper towel to clean it off our hands after playing with it then use a little bit of vinegar on our hands to neutralize the Yuck a bit before washing our hands. That seemed to work the best for us for cleanup. We also used empty plastic butter containers and plastic ice cream buckets that we could dedicate to making Yuck in.

To have the optimum experience with your Yuck, it is best to have a sense of humor, a good attitude about getting your hands .. well.. yucky and gross, and excitement about having some good old-fashioned fun. We did do some science lab reporting when we first made the Chunky Yuck. Basically to practice our observation and recording skills. We want to try experimenting with the Yuck to grow seeds with and maybe come up with some other experiments as well in the future. My oldest was thinking, wouldn’t this be cool for their Youth Pastor to get some when they do their outside games such as water balloon fights and other stuff? In the summer we are thinking about getting some more to use on our slip-n-slide.

How about you? Care to to explore and look into what fun you can have with some Yuck?

  1. How long does this stay “good” after you mix it? Do you dispose of it after playing with it or if you keep it in a container with a lid on it does it last for weeks, months? I’m going to request a sample! Thanks for posting the great review!

  2. Ha ha ha – what a wonderful picture of her expression! Also, thanks for submitting your funny doggy story on “Animal Antics”!
