Another TOS Homeschool product I received for review was from The Critical Thinking Company.

I just love learning about new companies I have not heard about before. This time was no exception. I received a copy of Balance Benders (Beginning) for free to review, it is a book of logic problems that help to work on a child’s deductive reasoning and pre-algebra skills.

The beginning book is geared for grades 2-6. How it works is there is a picture of a balance scale at the top of the page that your child has to analyze and use to solve problems on the page based on what is shown for that scale. You can view a sample page here on their website.

I gave the book to my 7 year old to try and she absolutely loved working on the problems. The book starts out easy and works to more difficult problems and concepts. At first you are shown balance scales with items that weigh the same and you use those to determine what equations are correct. Later your child has to deal with inequalities in order to determine the solutions to the problems.

At first I was not sure what to make of the book itself until my child and I started working on the problems. After going through a few problems, I saw it as a wonderful way of learning critical thinking skills that will help my child develop her reasoning skills as she works through more difficult math concepts.
