TOS Homeschool Crew Review: Bright Ideas Press

I am always looking at new ways to teach science. I was particularly happy to find out that I was chosen to receive a free copy of Bright Ideas Press book, Earth & Space by Stephanie Redmond.

This book is one of a group of books put out by Bright Ideas Press called Christian Kids Explore Science. Being a Christian, looking for science resources can be a challenge since many take the view that some of the secular theories are more fact than theory and often exclude or refuse to teach other theories based on God’s word. Which often amazes me in light of the fact that all that is within the Bible has been found to be accurate scientifically as well as historically. For example the earth is round and it was mentioned to be round in the Bible long before “scientists” actually declared it to be round. All they would have had to do was read it in the Bible. Yet many scientists refuse to consider Christians as scientists. For this reason I was pleased to find a science book that approached science from a Biblical perspective and not a secular one.

Now that you know why it is important to me that a science resource is Biblically sound, let me tell you about the book Earth & Science. This book provides the students with 24 lessons and 6 unit reviews on material that covers information on the Earth as well as the universe. There is very little preparation needed in order to go through the lessons which makes it easy to use and the material is the right portion for grades 4-8 to digest. In the book and especially in the back, there are reproducibles that are used in the various lessons, memorization lists, Scripture memory, coloring pages, recipes and supplemental activities, a section on how to make a folder book, a book and resource list and an answer key. Each lesson has a list of vocabulary, text to read as well as coloring pages, activities and questions to go over. It is enough material on its own but the author recommends that the students maintain a science notebook as well. Since we do notebooking and keep things in binders, this was a perfect fit for our family.

I have done another Science book series which had very short basic lessons on various topics but I like Earth & Space book we received better. Earth & Space has just the right amount of detail and activities for for my kids for our daily science lesson. Being eclectic-minded, I still supplement but for those who don’t, this seems to be something that would work well too.

Some of the topics covered in this book are earth’s creation, earth and its structure, caves, volcanoes, rock types, oceans, air composition, makeup of the universe, the sun, planets, and many other topics.
