TOS Homeschool Crew Review: Nutrition 101: Choose Life!

According to Growing Healthy Homes website, their goal is “to educate and train families regarding God’s plan to optimum health as outlined in the Bible.”

With this goal in mind, their book, Nutrition 101: Choose Life!, can be used for both science as well as health studies. This book teaches you all about the major body systems and how nutrition affects each.
The book is divided into the following sections: 1) The Brain and Nervous System; 2) Digestion and Elimination; 3) Respiration and Olfactory; 4) Muscular and Skeletal Systems; 5) Cardiovascular and Immune Systems; and 6) Endocrine System and Emotions. Each section is firmly based on the Bible and is full of hands on activities, science and art projects, discussion questions in addition to various recipes in order to teach and support each concept taught throughout the book. Its 448 pages can be used for all age groups and is perfect for any style of homeschooling. It was co-authored by “homeschool mother Debra Raybern, N.D., M.H., C.N.C., I.C.A.; homeschool mother and researcher Sera Johnson, B.MU; mother and writer/editor Laura Hopkins, B.S.; and mother, grandmother and former Home Economics teacher Karen Hopkins, B.S.”
For our family as eclectic homeschoolers, it is a perfect match. Especially since we have been recently led by God to start taking better care of the body that He has given us. We do notebooking as part of what we do so we are able to take small sections each day and work it into our daily studies. We normally read the chapter at the beginning of each section followed by a discussion of the material using the questions provided in each section as a guide. They kids write up their answers, any notes and new vocabulary words in their individual notebooks. The kids then choose several activities to do from the many provided in each section in order to get hands on experience related to what is currently being studied that day. Additional resources are also suggested and we even further supplement with materials that we have on hand in order to learn more in depth about an area that the kids have developed more of an interest from reading each of the sections. We also use the recipes in each section to reinforce and apply what we have learned in order to have a complete and well-rounded practical experience. Most curriculums teach you the knowledge but do not help you to put it into action. This is one of the strengths of Nutrition 101. It not only teaches you the knowledge you need but takes it further by putting what you learn into practice. The book is jam packed with practical and important knowledge that everyone should learn. We were simply amazed by the quality of the information within Nutrition 101. It was so different from other books on nutrition and health. It is not only a book but a tool to better living.
